Review:
Lessons in Chemistry is such a good read. It follows the story of Elizabeth Zott, a scientist, mom, and star of a cooking show. The narrative switches between past and present giving us a complete story of the hardships Elizabeth faced to be where she is in the present.
Her story is one of love, frustration, and perseverance. An incredibly intelligent chemist, Elizabeth faces much discrimination as a woman in the 1960s. We see her overcome many obstacles in her career and as a single mom. This story keeps you on your toes while connecting Elizabeth’s past, present, and future into a compelling narrative. I don’t want to share too much more so you’ll have to read the rest yourself!
This is now a show on Apple TV and it looks so good. If anyone has watched it let me know! The only thing I didn’t love about this book was the dynamic it presents between Christianity and science. The book made Christianity appear to not believe in science, when in my opinion they often go together. Other than that, I think this book is such a great read and does a great job at displaying an accurate representation of the discrimination many women faced and still face today in the workplace.
Recipe:
During Elizabeth’s time as a cooking show host she cooks The “Perfect” Lasagna. She created this recipe through chemistry of course! I found this adorable website with recipes from her cooking show.
